How large is the [[[Fe.sup.III](protoporphyrin) IX].sup.+] ion ([hemin.sup.+]) in the gas phase?
Article Abstract:
The measurements of the averaged collision cross-section of the [omega] of [hemin.sup.+] and that of a related species, the [[[Fe.sup.III]-tetraphenylporphyrin].sup.+] ion (Fe[TPP.sup.+]) are presented. The comparison of the collision cross-section of the Fe[TPP.sup.+] ion, [hemin.sup.+], measured by ion-mobility experiments and the cross-sections calculated from theoretical structures have revealed that [hemin.sup.+], in the gas phase, contains intramolecular hydrogen bonding between its propionic acid side chains.
